Explore the extravagant world of the late Ottoman Empire on the Eclectic Istanbul Tour. Take in the grandeur of Istiklal Street. Dive into the lively laneways of Tunel. Gaze up at Galata tower. Walk across Galata Bridge to the Spice Market. Visit the tiny but perfect Rustem Pasha Mosque. Feel like an Ottoman on Bosporus cruise.
The tour starts on the shores of the Bosphorus. We walk the public halls of Dolmabahce Palace, a 19th style century showpiece built between 1843 and 1856. Every room is crammed with exotic gifts to the Sultans from visiting foreign dignitaries.
Istiklal Street is a vibrant one-and-a-half kilometre long pedestrian zone. It’s been home to elegant buildings, consulates, local businesses and upmarket restaurants since the 18th century. At the end is Tunel, an inviting neighbourhood brimming with boutiques, music stores and cafes. It’s home to the 14th century Galata Tower too. This stone medieval structure was used by the Genoans. Known as Galatians, they kept an eye on their goods being delivered to the docks below.
The narrow backstreets of Beyoglu lead to Galata Bridge. As we cross it, you’ll see fisherman and street vendors. Below and on either side, the water is full of boats, big and small.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at a spot recommended by your guide.
Make sure you leave room for something sweet. We’re off to the Spice Market and you’ll be tempted by heavenly squares of Turkish Delight.
You’ll relish the calm of Rustem Pasha Mosque. It was built in the 16th century by the famous Turkish architect Mimar Sinan. The stunning array of Iznik tiles inside will dazzle you.
The highlight of the tour is a Bosphorus Cruise. We catch a public ferry, much loved by locals, up the strait. On the Bosphorus cruise you’ll see gorgeous examples of yali, traditional wooden houses, set among lush groves of trees.
